The Theory Test
Once you have your provisional licence, you can apply to take your theory test. The theory test is based upon the contents of the Highway Code and consists of 50 multiple choice questions. You need to answer at least 43 questions correctly in order to pass and have 57 minutes to complete the test.

Once the multi-choice question part of the test has finished the Hazard Perception Test will begin. This requires you to identify the hazards on the 14 different 1 minute clips by clicking the mouse. Thirteen of the clips will have one hazard, the other will have two. There is a maximum of 5 points available per clip and a maximum possible score of 75.

To pass you need to achieve 44 or more. Before the test begins a short video tutorial will play giving you the full instruction.

The combined cost of taking these tests is £31. You have to pass both parts in order to pass. If you pass one but fail the other you will have to re-take both.

The Practical Driving Test
Once you have passed the theory test and your driving is up to the required standard you can then take your practical test.

The practical test lasts for around 40 minutes and requires you to drive safely in a variety of road and traffic situations. You will also have to successfully perform two of the reversing manoeuvres and may have to perform an emergency stop.

The test will begin with an eyesight test - you must be able to read a number plate from 20.5 metres - and two questions from the Show Me, Tell Me questions bank.

To pass the practical test you must score no more than 15 driver faults. If you score just one or serious or dangerous fault you will fail.

The test costs £62.00 on a weekday or £75.00, if you take the test during the weekend.
